There are 11.6 million women-owned businesses, employing nearly 9 million people and generating more than $1.7 trillion in revenue in the United States.
In the last 20 years, female-owned businesses in the US has more than doubled. Specifically, the number of female-owned businesses has risen from 21,996 in 2002 to more than 45,000 in 2017. During this 15-year period, a 106.9 percent growth has been seen in women-owned business.
North Carolina has more than 333,000 businesses owned by women statewide. These women-owned, North Carolina businesses employ 279,700 people and generate more than $39.4 billion each year.
Women of color contribute largely to this explosive growth.
As of 2017, there are an estimated:
· 2.2 million African American, women-owned firms;
· Almost 2 million Latina-owned businesses;
· 1 million Asian American women-owned companies;
· 161,500 Native American/Alaska Native women-owned enterprises and;
· 34,200 Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander women-owned firms.
The report estimates that if revenues generated by minority, women-owned firms matched those currently generated by other women-owned businesses, they would add $1.1 trillion in revenues and 3.8 million new jobs to the U.S. economy.
